Ms. Lois Russell of Lethbridge passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the age of 84 years.
Lois was born in Montreal, Quebec, where she attended a Catholic girl’s academy from grade school through high school. At the age of seven or eight, she suffered a serious ice-skating accident resulting in a brain injury which caused lifelong difficulties with short-term memory, but it did not prevent Lois from living a full and active life.
She later made her home in Sudbury, Ontario, where she worked as a school bus driver for 22 years and was deeply involved in her community. Lois served with Beavers and Cubs, was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion four times, and became active with the Sea and Army Cadets. In 1997, she became Commanding Officer of the Navy League Corps in Sudbury.
In 2001, Lois moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, where she continued her life of service through a seven-year mission at the LDS Employment Office. She later became a family history consultant and developed a passion for genealogy, growing her family history database from about 40 names to more than 33,000. Lois also greatly valued the many friendships she made during her years in Lethbridge.
Lois enjoyed swimming, reading, driving, camping and gardening, and she had a great love for animals. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humour, warm smile, and lifelong dedication to helping others. Her family feels that her life beautifully reflected her matriarchal blessing and its call to serve those around her.
Lois is survived by her sons Nelson Russell and Brian Russell; grandchildren Blake Russell and Cooper Russell; sisters Judy Morris and Sandra Roberts; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Lois was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lloyd Simon Russell, and her brother, Norman Spicer.
A Memorial Service will be held at 9:00 AM on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at PARK MEADOWS WARD - THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, 2213 6a Ave N, Lethbridge, AB.
Flowers are gratefully declined; for those who wish, donations may be made to the Alberta SPCA, 17904 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 2W3.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.
