Mildred Landry (nee Houdek) of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Euclid “Frenchy” Landry, passed away peacefully at the incredible age of 100 years at St Therese Villa in Lethbridge on Sept 26, 2022.
Mildred was born on November 3, 1921, in Springwater, Saskatchewan. Her parents were William Houdek and Frances Houdek (nee Zabranki) and step-mother Francis Philipkova. Mildred had 3 sisters, Blanche, Gladys and Alma; 3 step-sisters, Sylvia, Irene and Jane; and 1 step-brother William.
Mildred had a grade 8 formal education. She continued her studies as an adult in 1943 and graduated from the Chicago School of Nursing with a Practical Nurse Diploma. She started her career at St Margaret’s Hospital in Biggar SK and then the Red Cross Outpost Hospital at Carragana SK and finally on to St Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge AB. Mildred made her final home in Lethbridge prior to 1947 and lived there until her passing. Mildred met her husband Euclid at St Michael’s hospital, and this was one of her fondest memories that she wished to share. “When I went to work at St Michael’s Hospital I met a patient, Euclid Landry. As days went by I got lonesome. Someone else did too. We were married in October of 1947. Euclid built our home. Then life began. Travelled Canada and USA, learned to camp, then the Jeep bug started. This was a busy time.” Her most memorable trips included driving to Alaska in 1963 and then again in 1992. Two other memorable trips were driving to Vancouver Island 25 years apart. Mildred and Euclid spent a lot of their time camping. They also spent many weekends supporting their son William and daughter Yvonne at Jeep Rallies and Races, meeting new people and adventuring all over Alberta, British Columbia and Montana.
Mildred managed her husband’s business Frenchy’s Plumbing, she answered the phone and did the bookkeeping. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting and gardening and her favorite was Old Time Dancing and music. She belonged to the Pemmican Club in Lethbridge and served as the president for one term. The New Year’s Eve dance on TV with the Pemmican Club every year was a highlight of her year. The front yard was her favorite place to be amongst all the flowers. Mildred was working in her flower garden in her front yard until she was 95 years old.
Mildred is survived by her son William Landry (Melaina Plester) of Lethbridge. Her grandsons Cameron Landry and his daughter Davey; Curtis Landry (Vanessa Thiessen) and his sons Cruz and Owen; and Dean (Ashley) Landry as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Besides her loving husband Euclid Landry, Mildred was predeceased by her parents William and Francis Houdek and her daughter Yvonne Landry.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
