Official Obituary of

22/3/2016 - to - 10/8/2016

Jonas Hurnanen1932 ~ 2016 On August 10, 2016, Jonas Hurnanen came to the end of his journey after a long and courageous fight with a series of illnesses at the age of 84 years young. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife and sweetheart Marie, daughter Mikayla, and son Justin. He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Eileen Landa, and brother, Roy (Marlyn) Hurnanen, as well as his many treasured nieces and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by his in-laws Joe (Arlene) Keller and Marlene (Allan) Kaupp and their sons Bryce and Brock.Jonas was predeceased by his infant sister, Iona Mae (1953), father John (1953), mother Eileen (2000), brother in-law Delbert Johnson (2001), brother in-law Saul Landa (2009), and sister Lila Johnson (2011).Jonas was born on the family farm at Black Spring Ridge near Carmangay in 1932. His first obstacle in life was polio disease, which he overcame without even a limp. He then attended Black Spring Ridge School, Carmangay School, and Red Deer Composite High School. After Jonas’ fathers passing in 1953, Jonas chose to stay on the farm; working and helping raise his younger siblings. He remained on the farm, proudly working the land, feeding cattle, and enjoying the serenity of farm life. Jonas lived life on the edge and had a very competitive spirit. He actively skied, hunted, curled and farmed well into his 70’s. Jonas loved anything that involved risk. This made farming, the stock and cattle markets, horse racing, chess, card games, and 649 tickets his passions right up until the end.Jonas felt very fortunate for the gift of a wife and children late in life and treasured the richness of family life. Nothing pleased him more than to support his children in their activities, and to offer words of encouragement and advice. Mikayla’s interest in horses and Justin’s interest in sports thrilled Jonas. He was also adored by our many family pets, and will be missed dearly by them all, especially Dolly and Bennett. We would like to extend a huge thank you and blessings to the staff at the Southern Alberta Renal Program, especially Dr. Morley Wong, who Jonas trusted to no end. Also, we would like to say a very special thank you to the staff of 4C at the Chinook Regional Hospital for their kindness and exceptional care.Jonas received many units of blood over the course of his illnesses and we would appreciate donations of blood to the Canadian Blood Services in remembrance. We also would like to encourage all to consider organ donation and register your intent online at the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Registry. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:30pm on Monday, August 15, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB., Layne Johnson officiating.
