Jesse Huizinga
Official Obituary of
12/6/1996 - to - 15/5/2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jesse Huizinga at the age of 28.
Born at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Jesse spent his early years immersed in the warmth of family and the joys of childhood. He cherished summers at the family cottage on West Hawk Lake where he would have the best of times with his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was passionate about hockey, often found skating on St. James’ rinks late into the night, undeterred by the cold.
In 2015, Jesse moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, where he continued to touch the lives of those around him with his warmth, generosity, and unwavering loyalty meeting and making some amazing new friends that meant the world to him.
He was a devoted fiancé to the love of his life Courtney Slagel and a loving father to Lacey, Zoey, Bentley, and Bryson. He loved watching the girls in Cheer and couldn’t wait to get Bentley into Hockey. Thankfully they made many memories on their family holidays over the years.
Jesse was a dedicated derrickhand with Ensign Energy Services, known for his exceptional work ethic and resilience. He embraced the demanding nature of his role, often working through injuries, embodying the spirit of the traditional oilfield worker. His commitment and toughness were evident to all who worked alongside him.
Jesse’s zest for life was infectious. He worked hard and played hard. He was like a mini tornado, bouncing into the house, raiding the fridge, taking a quick nap, and then heading out again. His love for food was well known among family. Some favourites being Grandad’s and Grampa’s ribs (different recipes), and a nice thick BBQ steak. He especially adored his fiancée Courtney’s shepherd’s pie and Quesadillas, recently declaring it even better than his mom’s.
Jesse is survived by his fiancée, Courtney Slagel; their children, Lacey, Zoey, Bentley, and Bryson; his mother, Soleil Huizinga Shepherd; father, Jerry Shepherd; brothers, Tristan and Jerry Shepherd; sister, Bailey Shepherd; aunt, Anne Huizinga; cousin, Jaya; grandmother Andryia Browne and numerous other relatives who held a special place in his heart. He will also be lovingly remembered by Courtney’s parents, Al and Barb Slagel), who welcomed Jesse into their family with open arms. Jesse is also survived by an insurmountable amount of extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, Shawn Jonathan Bannon; cousin, Kensey Crawford; great-great-grandmother, Emily Barnett; great-grandparents, Maureen and Stan Combe; grandparents, April and Gilles; Nana Anne Huizinga; Opa, Hubert Huizinga; and Nana Margaret Dietz.
Jesse’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and deep connections. He will be remembered for his zest for life, his protective nature, and his ability to keep us all on our toes.
