Barbara Hillmer

Official Obituary of

19/10/1933 - to - 13/11/2018

1933 ~ 2018

Barbara was born in 1933 in Lethbridge Alberta. She was the first child of Jim & Frances Fellger. They lived in Del Bonita where she started school before moving to the family farm in Magrath. Barbara continued school in the one room Farmhill schoolhouse. She completed high school in Magrath as the valedictorian of her class and started nurses training in Calgary. She married Norman Hillmer in 1954 and they had a son Ken and daughter Debbie.

Barbara took great pride in her family, her home and especially her yard. Vacation destinations were almost always planned around the fruit seasons so she could do her yearly canning. Even though she had a full time job taking care of her family and home she still worked outside the home. Barbara enjoyed working with Welcome Wagon when they lived in Lethbridge, with the Magrath Trading Company after the move to Magrath in 1968 and then with the Bank of Montreal for many years before finally retiring in 1995. Many large family gatherings were held at her house where we all enjoyed her amazing cooking skills and made lasting memories.

After the sudden death of her son Ken in 1976, Barbara worked even harder at making her home and yard a show piece. Their Christmas display inside and outside grew every year as a tribute to him.

She was an extremely supportive grandmother to Ken & Kurtis and rarely missed any activity they were involved in. Many miles were driven and hours spent in cold hockey arenas and at baseball diamonds as she watched her grandsons excel at sports. She took great pride in all their accomplishments and had strong beliefs about which side of the family all of their talents came from!

She was very excited when the great grandchildren came along. Her health was declining by this time so how she showed love needed to change a bit, so a story book always came out at the sight of her great grandchildren. She truly loved each of them and treasured every moment spent with them.

The last few years have been difficult for Barbara, but she still did her best to keep Norman and Debbie in line. She lit up when the grandkids or great grandkids came to visit and a story book still came out, with them now reading to her. We take comfort in knowing she is at peace and with Ken.

Barbara was predeceased by her son Ken, both her parents, Jim & Frances Fellger and her three siblings, Charles Fellger, Marlene Paul and Carolyn Neilson. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 64 years, Norman, her daughter Debbie, her grandsons Ken & Kurtis, granddaughter in law Julie and her great-grandchildren Jace, Colton & Izabella.

Barbara taught her loved ones the importance of family as well as a strong work ethic. She will be forever loved, dearly missed, and always in our hearts.
