Alice Heynen

Official Obituary of

22/9/1936 - to - 20/11/2016

Mrs. Alice Heynen, beloved wife of Mr. John Heynen, passed into the presence of her Lord on November 20, 2016 at the age of 80 years.

Alice was the youngest of seven children, born in Minitonas, MB on September 22, 1936. She grew up on the family farm in Swan River, MB, then at seventeen, she followed her sister, Evelyn, to Edmonton, AB and finished high school at The Christian Training Institute, now known as Taylor College and Seminary. After graduation, she worked for the RCMP in Edmonton for three years before entering Saint Boniface School of Nursing in Winnipeg, MB where she graduated as an R.N. in 1962. She nursed her first year at the Winnipeg Hospital and then adventurously took a position at the hospital in Whitehorse, YT. It was there, on a riverboat cruise, that she met her husband, John. They married in 1965 and settled in Lethbridge, AB. Alice nursed at the Regional Hospital, Saint Michael’s Hospital, at the Roy and Hunt Clinics, as well as in Coaldale until 1974, when her daughter, Carol, was born, followed two years later, by her son Christopher. She stayed at home to raise her family, but returned to nursing in 1980, first for the Lethbridge Health Unit, teaching prenatal classes, but eventually serving in geriatrics at a variety of care homes in Lethbridge and Vulcan until her retirement in 2007. Alice loved nursing and worked as an R.N. for a total of 39 years. In retirement, she continued to extend caregiving and show hospitality by visiting the elderly, and sharing homemade pies, muffins, and applesauce with many friends and neighbours. She had a strong faith in God, committing her life to Christ at the age of ten. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Lethbridge since 1966. She enjoyed many friends while living in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Whitehorse, and Lethbridge. Her family, including nieces and nephews, were a wonderful part of her life, staying in touch through the years by faithfully remembering birthdays.

She was predeceased by her parents: Gottfried and Henrietta; and her siblings: Mary Henkelman, Erwin Henkelman, Tillie Retig, Martha Heiman, and Evelyn Dykau. Left to mourn are her loving husband: John; daughter: Carol of Abbotsford, BC; son: Christopher (& Yael Greenfeld), and grandson Isaac of Squamish, BC; brother: Fred (& Ruth) Henkelman of Kelowna, BC; sister-in-law: Adina Henkelman of Winnipeg MB; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 1614 5 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB, on November 30 at 1:00pm with Pastor Bruce Martin, officiating.

Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church (1614 5 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0W3) or to St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit (1400-3 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4V5)
