It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hendrikus (Hank) Hurkens on September 26, 2026.
Hank was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carole; his daughter, Susan; his parents, Gerardus and Hendrika; his brothers, Garry and Cor; and his sisters, Francis, Marie, Gonda, Gerdie, and Rita.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, including his children Garry (Colleen) Hurkens, Sheila (Sandy) Cook, and Sandra (Rob) Price; seven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Toni (Adolf), Nellie (Steve), Lia (Albert), and Joey, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Born on May 30, 1937, in Mill, Holland, Hank immigrated to Canada with his family in 1948. He first settled in Ontario before eventually making Southern Alberta his home. Leaving school at an early age to help support his family, Hank later earned his Master Electrician certification from SAIT, a testament to his determination and strong work ethic. He went on to become the proud owner and operator of Hurkens Electric in Picture Butte, serving the community for many years. Following his retirement, Hank continued his commitment to public service by serving on the Picture Butte Town Council for 12 years, a role he embraced with great pride.
Hank was truly one of a kind. He was a devoted husband, a dedicated father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a loyal friend. His larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Outgoing and fun-loving, Hank never hesitated to share his opinions and loved striking up conversations with anyone he encountered. Whether chatting with a stranger, making a toddler laugh in a restaurant, or greeting a baby with a warm smile, Hank had a remarkable gift for connecting with people. To many, both family and friends alike, he was simply known as “Grandpa.”
In his younger years, Hank enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sharing adventures with lifelong friends. He loved camping, and some of his happiest moments were spent around a campfire, guitar in hand, while family and friends sang, laughed, and created memories together. Music remained a constant source of joy throughout his life. In his later years, he shared that passion with fellow residents at Blue Sky Lodge and Hardie Manor, gathering family and friends to entertain others and brighten their days. Wherever Hank went, he could often be heard quietly singing a tune.
Of all his accomplishments, Hank was most proud of his family. They were the center of his life, and his greatest joy was watching them grow and thrive.
Hank leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, friendship, and community service. His kindness, generosity, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the lives he touched will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
