Peter Hanhart of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Alice Hanhart, passed away suddenly on October 18, 2009 at the age of 81 years.
Peter's life was a testament to his enduring faith. Throughout his life, he served faithfully those with whom he came into contact whether family, friends, associates or neighbors.
Besides his loving wife, Alice, Peter is survived by his son Steve (Jola) Hanhart of DeWinton, and by his daughters Gerri (John) Wilson, Carol (Ron) Kundrik, Anita (Kevin) Wickersham. Peter also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren Ben (Cassandra) Hanhart, Lindsay (Chris) Thompson, Rachel Hanhart, Luke Hanhart; Jonathan Wilson, Alyssa Wilson, Michael Wilson; Sara Kundrik, Emily Kundrik, Rebecca Kundrik; Stephanie (Kane Kamieniecki) Wickersham, T. J. Wickersham, Tasha Wickersham and Tyler Wickersham as well as numerous extended family members.
Peter was born in Tilburg, the Netherlands on September 1, 1928, to Karel and Sara Maria Hanhart, the fifth child in a family of seven children. In 1951, he became engaged to the love of his life Alice and shortly after emigrated to Lethbridge where his brother was a minister at the Monarch Reformed Church. He married Alice in 1953 and they started their family three years later. He articled in Canada with Williams, Tanner, Bell and Watkinson, graduating in 1958 as a Chartered Accountant.
Being entrepreneurial, Peter soon opened his own practice and shortly after was a partner in the Chartered Accounting firm of Watkinson, Hanhart, Duda, Dorchak, retiring in 1988.
Throughout the years, Peter was active within the congregations of which he was a member, including the Hope Reformed Church, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Victory Christian Fellowship and College Drive Community Church. He also faithfully served the communities at Lethbridge Christian School and Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship.
Peter lived his retirement fully, especially enjoying time with his fourteen grandchildren who brought him great joy. He spent many hours working on his genealogical research and had recently published a family history.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, October 23, 2009 at ST. ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 - 5 Ave S., Lethbridge, with Reverend Hugh Jack officiating.
Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Counselling Centre; Streets Alive, 323 - 4 Street S, or the Interfaith Food Bank.
