MARSHALL NELSON ""MARK"" GRANT, beloved husband to the late Mrs. Margaret Grant, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the age of 91 years.
Born March 28, 1917, died April 12, 2008 at the age of 91 years. Mark was born in Lethbridge and grew up in Southern Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta, receiving his B.Sc. in Agriculture and his M.Sc. in 1945, and was awarded the University of Alberta's Gold Medal in Agriculture. In the same year he married Josephine Metcalf, and in 1949 completed his PhD at the University of Wisconsin. His 32 year career was spent at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Lethbridge. Although he was initially a plant pathologist, his main contribution was as a wheat breeder, where he played a prominent role in the direction of cereal breeding in western Canada, developing and licensing many strains of winter wheat. In addition to his professional activities, he served as a judge at local science fairs, judged grain classes at seed fairs, and was a frequent speaker at farmer meetings. He retired in 1981and in 1982 was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association. He was a long serving member of the Kiwanis Club and volunteered at the annual Kiwanis Music Festival. Mark was an avid golfer and was a member of the Lethbridge Golf and Country Club, and he curled during the winter. In 1994 he moved to Victoria, B.C. where he took up lawn bowling with the CNIB. He moved to North Vancouver in 2000, where he continued to curl in the Norwest Senior Men's curling league, at one time having the distinction of being its oldest member.
Mark was predeceased by his parents, Earl A. Grant and Tillie V. Grant, his son, Brian James Grant. his wife, Margaret Josephine Grant, brothers Earl N. Grant and Douglas A. Grant, his sister, Dora-Mae Bieswanger, and his nieces Janis Lemiski and Diana Woodard. He is survived by his daughter Wendy Lyn Grant, grandson Christopher Grant, his nephew Leslie Grant, and nieces Barbara Burns, Lydia Shaddick, Rosalie Law, and great-niece Anna Woodard.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, April 28, 2008 at McKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 - 15 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Reverend Terry Shillington officiating.
