Elsie Groothuis

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mom and grandma. Elsie passed away suddenly at Edith Cavell Care Centre on May 7, 2021 at the age of 87 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 64 years, Ben, her daughters Jane Huisman (grandchildren Ashley and April), Lorraine Groothuis, Debra Edwards (husband Chaz) (grandchildren, Zachary, Natasha, Ethan and Tatiana) and her sister Ettie Toth.

She was predeceased by her daughter Sharon Groothuis (grandchild Ryan).

With her servant’s heart, she always shared her love for Jesus with others and was recognized by the Lethbridge Herald in 1998, as ‘Elsie the Morning Star’. She and Ben played many active roles in the various churches they attended.

Her passions included reading, singing and playing the piano. Growing up on the Nobleford farm, she gained a love of gardening. Her and Ben would often be found working in their own backyard garden, tending to their favorites - strawberries and roses. She loved baking and would kindly share with those around her. She also enjoyed walking around Henderson Lake with her treasured dog, Brandy.

Elsie will forever live on in our hearts. The family wishes to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to the caring staff at Edith Cavell Care Centre.

Due to COVID 19, there will be a service for the immediate family only at Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel.
