Douglas Orley Mueller, beloved husband of Elaine Mueller, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the age of 87 years.
Doug was born in Raymond, Alberta on May 7, 1939, to Henry and Violet Mueller.
Doug spent his first few years on his Grandpa Orley Iredale’s homestead south of Hoping. Later, the family moved to Nemiskam, where his father operated the Alberta Wheat Pool elevator. Doug and his brother Floyd often said they felt like they had won the lottery – surrounded by good people, a welcoming home, and the ever-present sound of the trains.
At a very young age, Doug developed a love for music, performing with his dad’s band, Mueller’s Music Makers. The band played for countless wedding dances and New Year’s Eve celebrations for over 40 years. Doug always said he was happiest when he was playing music at dances.
Doug also enjoyed playing baseball for the Nemiskam Ramblers, which competed in the Writing-On-Stone League.
In 1957, Doug purchased his first farm from Oscar Holmberg, located three miles west of Hoping. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Elaine Traxler. Together they worked side by side, building a wonderful life and raising their family.
In 1975, Doug and his best friend, George Piper, purchased a farm together from Dr. H.B. Hunt. They built a lifetime of memories, laughter and hard work on that land.
When winter arrived, Doug kept busy working on drilling rigs and proudly spent 24 years at Milk River Farm Supply.
Doug and Elaine were blessed with five children: Melody, Laurie, Janice, Kirt and Warren.
Doug was a dedicated supporter of his community and volunteered often. He was a member of the Foremost Elks, the Foremost Legion, the Sage Club, the Foremost Minor Hockey Association and the Foremost Historical Society. He especially enjoyed flipping pancakes on parade days and helping in the hockey rink kitchen.
In 1993, Doug and Elaine moved to Lethbridge after their two sons took over the farming operation. Retirement did not slow Doug down for long, and he soon began selling hail insurance for AFSC to keep busy. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Doug and Elaine were rarely apart. Whether enjoying coffee with friends at Tim Hortons, attending Hurricanes games, camping in Waterton, or dancing at the Great Canadian Barn Dance, they treasured their time together.
Besides his loving wife of 68 years, Doug is survived by his children Melody (George) Kirkham, Janice Herbst, Kirt (Maxine) Mueller, Warren (Paula) Mueller; grandchildren Evan (Melissa) Herbst, Jordan (Jessica) Herbst, Danielle (Brandon Hofer) Mueller, Pam (Matt) Allen, Shelby Kirkham, Brett (Morgan) Mueller, Stephanie (Dawson) Pahl; step-grandchild Travis (Lonnee) Lodermeier; great-grandchildren Halie, Zoey, Evie, Shaelyn, Arden, Olive, Phoebe, Tim; step-great-grandchildren Frankee, Simon and Jude.
Doug was predeceased by his daughter Laurie and his parents Henry and Violet Mueller.
Doug’s life will be celebrated during a private family service.
