Doris Corby

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of MRS. DORIS KATHLEEN CORBY (nee Jones) of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Stephen Corby, devoted mother, grandmother and sister, passed away at the St. Michael's Palliative Care Center on Friday October 19, 2007 at the age of 78 years.

Doris was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1928 and spent most of her childhood in Greyburn, SK. Her early school years were spent at Greyburn School. Her parents Frank and Hilda Jones were transferred to Lawson, SK where Doris and her six sisters continued their education. During her years of training at the Saskatchewan Psychiatric School of Nursing, she met her future husband, Stephen Corby. She graduated in May 1951. The following September, Doris and Steve were married at Zion United Church in Moose Jaw, SK. They then settled in the Edmonton, AB area, where they raised six children.

Doris' interests and energy were focused on her family and church. She believed in the importance of providing her children with a warm, loving and spiritual home. She was a voracious reader and quickly read through the books at the Spucewood Branch of the Edmonton Public Library, and had to transfer her membership to the Main Branch. She passed her passion for reading on to her children at an early age. She taught Sunday school at Erskine and Buchanan-Eastwood United Churches. Doris also volunteered with her local Girl Guide Association. In 1979, Steve was transferred to Lethbridge. They worshipped at McKillop United Church where Doris served in her UCW unit for many years. She also enjoyed volunteer work with other church members at the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen.

Doris is survived by her six children Hilda (John) Brown of Lethbridge and their children Richard, Carolyn (Randall), Stephen and John Jr; David (Antonia) Corby of Vancouver, BC and their children Vanessa (Pete), Catarina and Cristina; Jane (Edward) Bohuch of Edmonton and their children Paul, Elaina, Sara and Daniel; Thomas Corby of Lethbridge; Catherine Corby of Lethbridge; Doris (John) Connors of Coaldale and their children Kyle and Laura. Doris is also survived by her six sisters Gwen (Lloyd) Ring of Moose Jaw, SK, Elsie Nisbet of Regina, SK, the twins - Irene (Fred) Gattinger of Moose Jaw, SK and Eileen (Doug) Greig of Virden, MB, Esther (Doug) Mead of Victoria, BC, Muriel (Dennis) Anderson of Vancouver, BC, and also her dear friend and sister-in-law Ann (Louie) Kiss of Abbotsford, BC.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday Oct 26, 2007 at McKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 - 15 Ave South, Lethbridge, with the Reverend Terry Shillington and Reverend Cathy Coates officiating. Interment to follow in Mountview Cemetery.
