GRENALD COWAN
1924 ~ 2018
Mr. Grenald Earl Cowan of Magrath, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Jean Cowan, passed away at Raymond Hospital on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the age of 94 years.
Grenald Earl Cowan was born on September 2, 1924 near Halkirk, Alberta to his parents George Washington Cowan and Sarah Louise (Hunter). He was the fifth of eleven children. Grenald grew up on a farm north of Halkirk and went to school in Rosebank, just across the field from where he lived. He finished school at 14 years old and went to work on various farms. Around 1946 he drove truck for John Harris at Gadsby hauling coal and gravel. Eventually worked on construction running earth moving equipment. On September 2, 1960 he married the love of his life Jean Mae Grover, they had three children Rhonda Mae, Loretta Gale and Earl Edward, at this time he was working for Paul Wilfort. He bought his own cat and worked on roads and irrigation canals, eventually sold his cat and worked for the Cardston M.D. After retiring he went back to run finishing grader for a few years and then helped Mel Bingham and George Stafford farming for a few years. Grenald had a great work ethic and took pride in his work. Grenald loved to spend time with his children Rhonda (Derrel) Taylor, Loretta Cowan (Jim Troman), Earl (Treana) Cowan; grandchildren Christina Cowan (Rick Villa), Shane (Stacey) Hillmer, Lyle (Sarah) Hillmer, Russell Taylor (Tiana Orich), Jared Shipley, Samantha Cowan, Emmett Cowan, Lincoln Cowan; great-grandchildren Rayne, Lexy, Madyson, Bridgette, Braiden, Lucy, Crosby, Reggie, Hank, Madalyn, Emily, Brody, Malikai; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Besides his loving wife Jean, Grenald was predeceased by his parents George and Sarah; grandson Gunnar Cowan; 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Grenald will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.
A Celebration of Grenald’s Life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, September 24, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street S., Lethbridge, Alberta. For those who wish, you may pay your respects 1 hour prior. Interment will follow in the Magrath Cemetery.
