On Sunday, May 15th, 2011, DR. LAWRENCE DAVID CORDES passed away at home in Lethbridge, Alberta. Larry was a loving husband of 48 years to Janet and a wonderful father to Chris, Joel and Leigh. He is survived by his younger sister Deanne, younger brother John, and predeceased by his father Raymond and mother Helen (nee Haertel). Born in Fairmont, Minnesota on September 13th, 1940, Larry attended university at University of Minnesota, Duluth, obtaining a BSc.

After marrying his wife Janet they moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where he obtained a Masters in Science at UND. He then was accepted in the graduate program at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Doctorate in Ecology. Shortly thereafter, he and his young family moved to Calgary, Alberta where Larry taught at the University of Calgary for 30 years. It was through these years that Larry and Janet developed an agricultural lifestyle for their family, in the farming and ranching community of Rolling Hills, Alberta. With a passion for responsible stewardship for the land that he occupied, and the environment in general, Larry continued his endeavors as a farmer and ecologist. Larry conducted considerable research for Parks Canada along the west coast of Vancouver Island, always accompanied by his family who enjoyed living on some beach and exploring the forest. He was also involved with research in northern Canada to determine the effects on the environment in the event of the construction of hydro electric dams. Larry was strong in his beliefs and convictions and presented a powerful image to the world. For those who knew and loved him, this is how he will be remembered. He loved his family and was proud of his six grandchildren and enjoyed getting everyone together for camping and skiing trips.
