MR. ARTHUR MICHAEL BENNETT of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Eva Susan Bennett, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the age of 92 years.
Arthur was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on October 13, 1916 to Michael and Alice Bennett. The family moved to Lethbridge in 1923 and lived on the 300 block of 15 Street South. He attended Westminster School in North Lethbridge. The family moved to Shaugnessy in the early 1930's where his mother ran the Hotel Shaugnessy, a rooming house with a dry goods store on the ground floor. Arthur worked in the Shaugnessy mine for 13 years. When he left the mine, he worked for Purity Dairy where he was employed for over 25 years. During this time he and Eva lived on a small farm and then moved to Coalhurst. In 1926 they moved to Lethbridge. He left the dairy for health reasons and then took a sewing machine repair course and spent the last eight years of his working career repairing sewing machines for the Elna-White Sewing Centre in Lethbridge.
After his retirement, Arthur and his wife Eva joined the Lethbridge Senior Citizens' Organization where they were very active volunteers. They were the driving team for Wednesday's Wheels-to-Meals program. Arthur was an active member in the Woodworkers Hobby Club and enjoyed making all kinds of wood projects, especially making toys, etc. for all his grandchildren as well as numerous toys for the Salvation Army Santa Program.
Arthur was very active in his religious endeavors, the Berean Christadelphian Fellowship and would spend hours discussing the Bible with any person willing to listen to him. He was very passionate and faithful to his beliefs.
He lived in Alberta Rose Lodge for almost 20 years and felt that this was his home. He made many friends and the family would like to thank the staff and residents, both past and present, for their caring ways with Arthur.
Arthur enjoyed being around his many grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his son Michael (Diane) Bennett of Lethbridge, his daughter Delma (Edward) Truelove, of North Battleford, SK; his grandchildren, Robert (Melanie) Bennett of Lethbridge, Susan (special friend Dave Williams) Bennett of Lethbridge, Dr. Debra (Dr. Sajid) Ravasia of Spokane, Washington, Darren (Kayla) Truelove of Beaumont, AB, and Cheryl (Joe) Poirier of Beaumont, AB; great-grandchildren; Amy Bennett, Samantha, Danielle and Michael Bennett, Kashif, Jehan, Chiara and Tariq Ravasia, Payton and Lucus Truelove, Jasmine and Melia Poirier, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Besides his loving wife Eva Susan (Crawford), Arthur was predeceased by his parents Michael and Alice (Edwards) Bennett. He was also predeceased by his three sisters, Edna (Oliver) Watmough, Doris (Tom) Crawford, and Agnes (Ed) Bolen and his four brothers Jack (Peggy) Bennett, Frank (Helen) Bennett, Harry (May) Bennett and Sidney (Juliette) Bennett.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday July 29, 2009 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Brother Gordon Jones, officiating.
