Ernest “Ernie” Paul Wiebe formerly of Coaldale AB, passed away peacefully on Nov 15, 2019 at the age of 75.
Ernie was born in Yarrow BC on December 21, 1943 to Jacob and Justina Wiebe. When Ernie was young his family moved to Coaldale AB. Ernie’s mother delivered milk in Coaldale with the milk wagon. Tex would help weekday mornings loading the milk crates and delivering to the north side of Coaldale and main street before heading to school. In the winter Ernie would work Saturdays when Wes and Tex went to play hockey in Lethbridge. Tex remembers when Ernie was young, he would disappear and they would find him in the coal bin eating coal, we never knew why, he seemed to have a craving for coal. Ernie also liked sugar, his hands where always in the sugar jar, maybe that is why he was the smallest of all the Wiebe boys.
Ernie was a dedicated and loyal employee for the City of Lethbridge, in the water meter division, for several years until his retirement.
Ernie’s greatest passion was music. He played violin for a while before taking up bass/rhythm guitar. The first band he played in was “Down Home” with his brothers and sister. Ernie played a “mean” bass guitar and for a majority of his life continued to play in local bands. Another one of Ernie’s passions was a local slow pitch team “The Falling Stars”, which he managed for about eight to ten years.
Ernie was a dedicated “Papa”, never forgetting a grandchild’s birthday. He will be missed by his grandchildren and great grandchild dearly.
Ernie is survived by his sons Darren Wiebe of Comox, Bradly Wiebe (Jaycee) of Lethbridge and predeceased by Craig Wiebe formerly of Coaldale. Also survived by his grandchildren, Tayla of Victoria, Tiffany and Braden of Lethbridge, Jordann of Lethbridge, Cody of Calgary, Toni of Lethbridge and one great grandchild Richard. Brothers Vernon (Sharon) Wiebe, Edwin” Tex” (Louise) Wiebe, Johnny (Pat) Wiebe, Richard (Lynn) Wiebe and one sister Charlotte Wiebe. Ernie was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Justina and brother Wes (Nadine) Wiebe.
